Petrópolis x Teresópolis

The Petrópolis–Teresópolis Traverse captivates mountaineers and trekking enthusiasts from all over Brazil. Located in the Serra dos Órgãos mountain range, this expedition crosses one of the greatest sanctuaries of Brazilian mountaineering. The route reveals towering rock spires, deep valleys, and endless horizons.

1º day

Sede Petrópolis - Castelos do Açu

We leave Rio de Janeiro at 5:00 a.m. and, after about a one-hour drive, begin the traverse in Petrópolis, in the Bonfim neighborhood, at 1,100 meters above sea level. The first day features steady ascents that already set the pace for the expedition.

Along the way, we pass attractions such as the Véu de Noiva and Andorinhas waterfalls, the Gruta do Presidente cave, and rest points like Pedra do Queijo and Ajax.

As we gain elevation, we witness the change in vegetation — leaving the Atlantic Forest behind and entering the high-altitude grasslands typical of the mountains.

At the end of the day, we arrive at Castelos do Açu, our first overnight stop, surrounded by impressive rock formations. If weather conditions allow, we end the day with a sunset at Morro do Cruzeiro, followed by dinner and rest in the mountains.

Start of the day: 6:00 a.m.
Total distance: 9 km
Meals included: dinner

2º day

Castelos do Açu - Pedra do Sino

The second day is the most technical and challenging of the traverse. After breakfast, we leave Castelos do Açu heading toward Morro do Marco and the steep ascent of Morro da Luva. Along the way, we tackle iconic sections such as the Elevator, featuring iron rungs for vertical progression; the Dive (Mergulho), an exposed descent using safety equipment; and the Cavalinho, a technical rock scramble near Pedra do Sino.

At the end of the day, we arrive at Abrigo Sino for dinner and rest, preparing for the most famous sunrise in the Serra dos Órgãos. With a good pace and clear weather, it is also possible to visit the impressive Portais de Hércules.

Meals included: breakfast and dinner

Total distance: 11 km

Overnight: Camping at Abrigo Sino

3º day

Pedra do Sino - Sede Teresópolis

The last day begins before sunrise. We hike for about 30 minutes to the summit of Pedra do Sino (2,275 m) to watch the sunrise from one of the highest points in the Serra dos Órgãos. On clear days, it is even possible to see the city of Rio de Janeiro on the horizon.

After this moment of contemplation, we return to the shelter for breakfast and begin the long descent toward the Teresópolis headquarters. It’s approximately 12 km downhill through the Atlantic Forest, passing natural viewpoints and landscapes that stretch across the entire mountain range. Depending on the group’s pace and energy, we may include a bonus stop at Morro da Cruz.

We finish the traverse at the park entrance in Teresópolis, celebrating the journey with a closing toast — wrapping up one of the most remarkable trekking experiences in Brazil.

Total distance: 12 km

Meals included: breakfast and dinner

What do we eat during the trek?

During the trekking, breakfast and dinner are included, carefully prepared by the guides throughout the traverse. Breakfast is simple yet hearty, usually including bread, fruits, eggs, and other items. Dinner is a warm and nutritious meal, which may vary between options such as pasta with protein, moqueca (Brazilian fish stew), rice, vegetables, and other dishes. We accommodate dietary restrictions (vegetarianism, intolerances, etc.), as long as they are informed in advance. Lunch / trail snacks are not included. We recommend that each participant bring their own light and practical snacks, such as nuts, cereal bars, dried or fresh fruits, to ensure enough energy throughout the hike.

Where will we sleep?

On both nights, we will sleep in camping tents. As it gets cold at night, it is essential to bring a sleeping pad and a cold-weather sleeping bag. Inside Serra dos Órgãos National Park (PARNASO), there are some support points. We do not sleep inside the shelters, but rather in the designated camping areas outside, where we set up our tents. The shelters serve only as safety support points and must be reserved in advance. Our team is responsible for carrying and setting up the tents.
