Blue Pool and Enchanted Pool in Chapada Diamantina

We’ve lost count of how many times we’ve been to Blue Pool and Enchanted Pool in Chapada Diamantina. And you know what never changes? The look on people’s faces when they get there.

There’s always a pause. A brief silence, before any photo or comment. Like the brain needs a few seconds to accept that water that blue actually exists — inside a rock cave, in the middle of Chapada Diamantina.

If you haven’t been yet, you’ll understand when you get there. If you have, you know exactly what we’re talking about.

“People get there and the first thing everyone does is look at the water and ask if it’s been edited. It hasn’t. That’s just how it looks.”

In this post we’ll walk you through what this day trip is like, what to expect from each pool, and some practical tips to make the most of it.

They share a name, but the experiences are completely different

A lot of people arrive thinking they’ll see the same thing twice. Not quite.

Blue Pool — here you get in the water

You float with a snorkel, look down, and see the bottom with a clarity that looks like an aquarium. The water is cold, crystal clear, and the cave around you makes everything feel surreal. The site first became famous after prehistoric fossils were discovered here — these days it’s famous for the swimming.

📍 Nova Redenção, BA · 🏊 Snorkel included

Enchanted Pool — here you just look, and that’s enough

No swimming, no getting in the water. And still, people leave speechless. The cave is larger, and the way light enters creates a play of reflections that shifts the color of the water every few minutes. Photography is allowed — and very much encouraged.

📍 Itaetê, BA · 🚫 Swimming prohibited (cave preservation)

The reason swimming isn’t allowed at Poço Encantado is simple: the water there has no circulation. Any trace of sunscreen or product on your skin will build up and damage the cave’s structure over time. The rule is just to look — and look a lot.

There’s a ray of light that comes through the rock and cuts through the water. You have to see it.

Something happens at both pools that we find hard to describe without sounding like we’re exaggerating: at certain times of day, a beam of sunlight enters through the cave opening, passes through the water, and lights up the bottom in a way that looks like a movie special effect.

It’s not an exaggeration. It’s pure geology — the angle of the opening, the transparency of the water, the position of the sun. Everything lines up into a spectacle that lasts a few hours a day, at certain times of year.

When to catch the ray of light at Poço Azul and Poço Encantado?

  • Poço Azul (Blue Pool): February to October, from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm
  • Poço Encantado (Enchanted Pool) : April to September, from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm
  • June and July tend to have the best angle at both spots

That said: even outside this window, both pools are stunning. The water doesn’t need the light ray to look the way it does. The phenomenon is a bonus — and when it happens, it stops everyone in their tracks.

What the day trip from Lençóis looks like — Poço Azul Chapada Diamantina

Departure is from Lençóis at 8:30 am. It’s about a 2-hour drive to the pools — a route that’s already beautiful, cutting through the heart of Chapada Diamantina. Return is around 5:00 pm.

The trail to the pools is easy, with steps, and requires no physical experience. You don’t need to be a trekker to enjoy this one — it’s one of the most accessible trips in Chapada and one of the most memorable.

What’s included:

  • Departure and return from Lençóis
  • Hours: 8:30 am to 5:00 pm
  • Easy level — stepped trail
  • Guide and entrance fees to both sites
  • Snorkel available for swimming at Poço Azul
  • Lunch at a restaurant near the site (not included)
  • Recommended for ages 12 and up (Poço Encantado requirement)

Things we always tell the group before arriving

1. No cream-based sunscreen on the day
Before entering Poço Azul, you’ll take a mandatory shower to remove any residue from your skin. To make things easier — and to help preserve the water — avoid applying any oily products on the morning of the trip.

2. Swimsuit and towel are a must
You will get in the water at Poço Azul, so come dressed for it or with your swimsuit easy to change into. If you have rubber water shoes, bring them — they help on the entry steps. We provide the snorkel.

3. A waterproof phone case changes everything
Underwater, with that clarity, the photos are unreal. If you have a waterproof case or underwater camera, bring it. Your friends will be jealous — guaranteed.

4. Holidays and school breaks get crowded
On regular weekdays the trip is much more relaxed. If you have flexibility with dates, avoid long holiday weekends — the entrance queues can get long during peak periods.

5. Have lunch there, no rush
There’s a restaurant near the site, and a slow midday lunch in the rhythm of Chapada is part of the experience. No rush. Enjoy it.
