The Fumacinha trail is one of our most delicate one-day hikes (round trip), and at the same time, one of the most immersive and rewarding experiences in all of Chapada Diamantina.
For us, Fumacinha is a natural sanctuary. Hidden inside a deep canyon that resembles a stone cathedral, sunlight barely reaches the ground. That’s why the water is extremely cold, almost ritualistic, a plunge that awakens the body and clears the mind. Remember to bring a jacket to warm up after the swim.
Often, we are gifted with a spectacle that feels choreographed by nature itself: swallows singing and flying inside the canyon. Their voices echo off the rock walls, their flight traces the space, and everything takes on a sacred atmosphere. It feels like stepping into a grand chapel carved over millions of years.
The Trail: A Jurassic World of Rivers and Stones
But Fumacinha is not just about the waterfall.
The entire hike is a journey through paradisiacal and almost Jurassic landscapes, where the river guides the way and the canyon slowly reveals itself.
The total distance is about 18 km (9 km each way), with much of the route following the riverbed. Along the way, you’ll cross the river several times, hop from rock to rock, and maintain constant attention to your footing.
The trail is not difficult because of steep climbs or intense elevation gain, but because it requires focus, technique, and endurance. It is a very meditative hike that invites full presence, every step matters.
Usually, it takes 3 to 4 hours to reach the waterfall, and the same time to return. At the waterfall, we spend about 1.5 hours enjoying the canyon and the natural pool. In total, the experience lasts around 9 hours, which is why we start early, at 7:00 am, when the day is just beginning in Chapada Diamantina.

Where is Fumacinha Waterfall Located
Fumacinha Waterfall is located in the village of Baixão, in the town of Ibicoara, in the southern region of Chapada Diamantina National Park.
Most travelers base themselves in Lençóis, as it is the town with the best infrastructure and an airport. However, to hike Fumacinha, it is essential to plan at least one night in Ibicoara. To start the trail at 7:00 am, we need to be already in the southern region of Chapada Diamantina.
Staying in Ibicoara: Dona Bia’s House
Our choice is Dona Bia’s house, just 5 minutes from the trailhead, almost like a guardian of Fumacinha.
She is a local resident who welcomes us with warmth, great conversation, and delicious homemade food. Staying there is part of the experience: simple, authentic, and deeply human. It is highly recommended.
Difficulty Level of the Fumacinha Trail
We consider the Fumacinha trail intermediate to advanced level, depending on your experience with trekking and long hikes.
At the end of the hike, already inside the canyon, there is a short lateral scrambling section, without exposure to height. These are simple movements, and the guide always provides full support. We will include a photo of this section so you can better visualize it.

Difficulty Level Changes With the River
It is very important to know that the difficulty level of the Fumacinha hike changes significantly depending on the river level and the moisture of the rocks.
When the river is high, the trail becomes more technical and demanding. The rocks tend to be more slippery, river crossings become more challenging, and the hiking pace naturally slows down. In these conditions, extra attention is required and the experience becomes more adventurous and physically demanding.
For this reason, we always assess river conditions and weather forecasts before running the tour, prioritizing safety and the quality of the experience.
Essential Gear: Why Hiking Boots Matter
Because a large part of the Fumacinha trail follows the riverbed with loose, wet and uneven rocks, the type of footwear makes a huge difference.
We strongly recommend proper hiking boots with a trekking-specific sole. This type of sole provides better grip, stability and foot protection, making the hike safer and more comfortable.
Urban sneakers or shoes with smooth soles can easily slip on wet rocks, increasing the risk of falls and making the hike much more tiring and unsafe. Hiking boots also protect your ankles, which are heavily used when jumping from rock to rock and during river crossings.
